They say that being an entrepreneur isn’t so much a job as it is a calling, a passion to create something that will improve the lives of others and make the world a better place. For Jim Mayoros, that passion came early in his life.
Jim was born and raised in Hesperia, California, a city on the northwestern edge of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert and the San Bernardino National Forest. He graduated high school and moved to Orem, Utah to attend Utah Valley University, where he met his wife. He transferred to Dixie University and they fell in love with the vibrant desert communities of Southern Utah. He later went on to earn a degree in Business Leadership from Ohio University before settling in St. George, Utah with his family.
One of Jim’s first jobs was working for Terminix Pest Control. When he moved to Southern Utah to attend Dixie University, he struggled to find a job. The area was just beginning to see a surge in population growth, but there still were not a lot of jobs. Undeterred by the lack of employment, Jim used his experience in pest control to start his own business, Sure Shot, offering pest control in southern Utah and the Las Vegas area. The business proved a success and lit the spark that fuels his passion as a businessman and entrepreneur.
After the success of his first venture, Jim started looking for more opportunities to expand his business enterprise. He discovered a landscaping company that was financially struggling and saw a lot of potential. Along with some friends from college he purchased the company and turned it into a thriving business with millions of dollars in contracts each year. He sold the business eventually, but continued working on ways to boost the local economy in Southern Utah.
By the mid-2000s the area was a hot spot of economic growth, experiencing a 689% increase in total job opportunities since the 1970s. Jim used his experience with starting and growing businesses to open several new companies and take advantage of the economic upswing in the area. He established two pizza restaurants in St. George and Orem before launching his current ventures, the St. George RV Park and Splash City Adventure Park.
Jim purchased St. George RV Park in 2016 and spearheaded a complete renovation of the 100-site campground to create a relaxing retreat for day trips, weekend adventures, and extended stays. Splash City is set to become Southern Utah’s first water park when it opens in 2021, providing a family-friendly place to cool off during the hot summer months. The park has also partnered with Dixie University to offer internships for students and will create hundreds of new jobs in the area.
Jim has spent his career dedicated to building successful businesses and fueling his passion to find ways to help the local community by creating jobs. He has been described as an innovator and calculated risk-taker, from his humble beginnings as a self-made businessman to a successful entrepreneur in the local community.
